Branson's space flight plan unveiledCommercial space travel came one step closer to being realised today when Sir Richard Branson unveiled Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo (SS2) on a barren airstrip tucked into the edge of the Mojave desert.
The carbon-composite craft is about the size of a Gulfstream jet and aims to enable anyone with enough money to pay for the privilege to be blasted to the brink of space.
By the looks of it, there is already quite a waiting list.
Scientist Stephen Hawking and celebrities such as X-Men director Brian Singer and former Dallas star Victoria Principal are among the 300 would-be space tourists who are said to have signed up for the proposed $200,000 (£122,400), two-and-a-half-hour flights to man's final frontier.
A further 82,000 people have registered their interest on the Virgin Galactic website.
However, it is rumoured that the very first pa**engers will be Branson himself, his two children and parents.
SS2's 12ft long pressurised cabin is designed to carry six pa**engers and two pilots.
After just three days of pre-training, pa**engers will take a trip that is literally out of this world, travelling beyond the Karman line - the generally acknowledged boundary of space, 100km up.
Here, for a few precious minutes, they will experience weightlessness while gazing out at the curvature of the Earth and, perhaps, other planets.
