OSLO (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for giving the world "hope for a better future" and striving for nuclear disarmament, in a surprise award that drew criticism as well as praise.

The decision to bestow one of the world's top accolades on a president less than nine months into his first term, who has yet to score a major foreign policy success, provoked gasps of surprise from journalists at the announcement in Oslo.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

The first African-American to hold his country's highest office, Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January

so i a**ume this is all because of being the first black president in the states because he hasnt done that much work.

it would be better if they had waited a bit longer with this. after such little time a**essing him they deicide to give him this presatigious award?

i personally think morgan tsangarai/watever went through a lot pain and struggle than dude, he physically fought for his

country and has even suffered severe injuries whilst fighting for his people and trying to bring a change to zimbabwe, and what do they have to say about that, "you a great man morgan" and thats it? WTF!!!

De Klerk won it along with Madiba, because he was instrumental in bringing an end to the armed struggle, by negotiating with the ANC. He was also already in office for more than 4 years.

Comparing it to Obama getting it for "giving hope" is ridiculous, and I am quite dissapointed in you.

I wonder how Hugo Chavez the Venezuelan state President feels about this one. Two weeks back he was questioning the real Obama between the one who pushed for the nuclear reforms in the world, and the one who is establishing another military base near/in Colombia.
