Sony (PlayStation) PS3 ship date - 2006

Sony´s PlayStation 3 will not appear until 2006 at the earliest, the company tacitly confirmed today. The company´s joint announcement with IBM and Toshiba that the PS3´s processor, ´Cell´, will be detailed at February 2005´s International Solid State Circuits Conference focuses on the chip´s features. However, it also notes that Sony plans to "commercialise" Cell-based products in 2006 and confirms that Cell will be used in the company´s "next-generation computer entertainment system".

That timeframe follows IBM´s plan to begin limited Cell production at its East Fishkill, New York 300mm wafer fab in the second half of 2005. In the past, IBM has pointed to an H1 2005 production start.

It´s a schedule that´s by no means at odds with what Sony has said so far. Cell is due to be unveiled mid-Q1 2005, and the PS3 is expected to be formally announced before the end of Q1 2005, when Sony´s 2005 fiscal year comes to a close. You wouldn´t expect Sony to talk about PS3 until Cell was complete, so those two events are clearly in sync.

PS3 is expected to make its first public appearance at the E3 show next May, just after Sony begins shipping first-generation console software development kits (SDKs), which are likely to be software-only offerings given IBM´s production scheduled. Sony´s roadmap calls for a second-generation SDK to appear October 2005, which will presumably ship alongside early hardware, again given IBM´s H2 production run.

Such a schedule would give developers a good shot at offering software for the console early to mid-2006, which is when the console is likely to appear.


This one is set to be a multi-media darling of a system/console.Will have to see bout it.Maybe we´ll all end up having PS3´s as our base units to make music from and perhaps record as well.Using the Cell as a midi controller. :-]

Trying to step my game up.

How good is the Nintendo GameCube in comparison to the new PS2? How about accessibility of the games for the respective platforms? Can the DvD-Rom on the Sony play DvD-R's and audio? Should I wait for the PS3 rather or its all just a waste of money.

Now u in my house :twisted: .............. PS2 does indeed play dvd-r, it also has the widest selection of gaming material, cos all the japanese, european and US software houses program for this platform, while mostly US houses program for X-Box, but some japs too, the X-box games are always very pretty cos of shitloads of power but a small percentage of the games are strong on gameplay. Cos well, just as far as i'm concerned the best game designers hav always been the japanese.

Many fuggin cool games never get released outside of japan, but they're all available on PS2, while only the hugest ones will get translated to X-box and well the peeps that work with Nintendo are "purists" who ONLY program for Nintendo.


Gamecube has very few games comparitively but their games are always fun, not many of them though and this platform is purely for gaming, no extra multimedia applications.

If you decide to go PS2 route, which isnt a bad way to go cos their are still shitloads of game sbeing produced and developed which should keep u happy well beyond the release of PS3, u might consider ordering a NTSC PS2 from japan, in SA we run PAL PS2's like in Europe, but the jap and US NTSC's support a higher framerate so the games run faster and look just slightly better, but that means you have to net-order all yo games.

you dont really gotta order all you need is a dual layer dvd-writer and your set. I'm gettin my shit modded next month and CNA,REGGIES,MUSICA can ALL go f*** themselves after that

Apperently its selling like "hoe-cakes" in the states and hackers have already started modding that sht. You can even watch dvd quality movie it.

But I have also been told that even with new popular products such as the PsP and the new PS2, Sony's profits are still declining. wow

The pink one is bullshit.

the third one and the last one are old pics of proposed casings put forward 18 months ago, as yet Sony has stated that they have not come to a final decision but they are apparently considering several of which these two are included.

The square blue one is sum bored hacker, who took a Gamecube and mashed the image wit an early prototype for PS2.
The round blue-ish one wher you see the whole thing is a Sony Discman which another bored photoshop junkie's phukked wit.
