I hate to bring this up again but can we establish some consensus on what the fair price of a locally produced CD should be?
I for one know I cannot afford the luxury of spending over 100bucks on local CDs without justification.
I try to cop some isht to support the industry @ least once a month but phuk it when the industry be trynna knock you offf for R120 for Baphixile I gotta say phuk the industry!

So what you think is a fair price?

I think it should depend on what goes into producing the cd. u know, packaging, If u got international features where u paid $10, 000 US for 16 bars, or worked with a lot of session musicians etc. i think its only fair that u should sell ur product at a recoupable price

Good point. I wont mind paying R100+ for Tumi & the Vol or Constructus coz they got that fancy packaging which I dont mind paying for that isht. It be a collectors thang. I DON'T expect to pay any extra for the Prokid album packaging coz that isht is WHACK! But if you (Nyambz) charged them for US$10K for it then I will be happy to add an extra R30 for that.

The thing is with international music I can at least listen to the samplers before the purchase. With local isht  there really inst that kinda network to tap into so I am really gambling when I cop isht before hearing it.
Last time I was holding the Shimani album contemplating it but sed phuk it coz I aint heard isht & I'll be damned if I waste R90-00 on something I listen to a max of 2 times!

word...i think for most releases between R60- R80 is a good price.  1stly artwork is usually wack, Mastering is wack and more importantly the artists are usually wack.

Strong words. But I can't really find the evidence to dispute your points.

Anyway, I reckon 60 - 80 is a reasonable price. That should be decent for an artist who has put out the work independently and has reasonable distro. Artists on name labels probably aren't seeing much dough, though, if the CD is retailing in that range.

I do agree that between R60 and I think possibly R90 for locally produced cd's is good bargaining. Also, u do have to look at what it took to put the work out, but also many times those extra costs seem to come from the marketing sphere. So ya........I do like that whole idea of the sampler though, Tate.I remember Kallitz did that for their album. They had u mail them and they'd mail the fans a sampler medley of their album which is really cool.Lets start this thing then.......always good to start somewhere.....how bout with the Hiphocalypse mixtape?

I think there is a threshold for pricing local releases. If you price over 90bux you will alienate some of the buyers who will think oh its the same price as the new Tony Yayo (YUCK) which is international (& therefore better quality) so let me just cop this instead at least I heard it on the radio.
Problem also may be that the same consumer base is buying SA hip hop. How many releases actually grow the consumer base? Did significantly (more than 30%) more people bought the ProVerb album than the Zubz album a couple of months earlier?..

i'll buy your average local shit for R50 - but that's mostly out of sympathy.

if anyone could make anything worth paying out R120 for, i'd buy it. but for that money, the music better be good, and the packaging, mixing and mastering must be international standard (more or less).

Me too,

bought the 5th floor album and Hipocalypse for 50 bux (out of sympathy:)). must say i was rather disappointed. Concentration Camp was a better investment (one or two good songs), still rather pricey though.

Think i gotta stop doing that shit though. Gotta have less sympathy for others n more for myself. 50 bux on more beer:) n maybe forget that I have yet to make ANY cash off my productions.

Actually the reviews I've heard thusfar were that the remixtape was a solid release quite different from the original. Advise you to hear it before you criticise you little hater.

Anyway V2 is coming out soon feel free to purchase that out of sympathy or otherwise :)
